Her determination burned like the intense fire of red. Her directness was like the passion found in the bright, vibrant hues of this red. As passionate as this color can be a powerful expression of self-confidence, my grandmother exuded these qualities in her approach to life.

Even though my grandmother and I never really had a strong emotional bond - she was known for her strict nature - I always cherish a deep respect for her. She was a pioneer in the field of feminism, and frankly, I have to admit that I recognize more of her traits in myself than I ever expected. She was the type of person who not only talked, but actually did what she said. Didn't like that? Then you just had to go the other way. Confidence, strength and perseverance are traits I first learned from her. She exuded determination and was direct in her approach. She was not here to be your friend; she was here to teach you valuable life lessons. Although I struggled with that at times during her life, I am grateful now for the unconventional but valuable lessons she taught me.

After all, what else do we have to do but learn?
